Switch off your mobile, set the automatic response on your email and leave the family pet with friends or family, and forget about all your cares and worries for a few days. That’s the whole point of holidays. Here are three destinations that will definitely help you to escape the rat race and have you in no hurry to check those emails.
I struggle with the concept of having me time, my mobile is constantly on and my mind is regularly buzzing with things I need to do, articles I need to write and I never fully switch off.
The only time I do switch off, is when I am abroad. Normally because I can’t afford the roaming charges, but mainly because why on earth would I be sat inside on my laptop when I could be soaking up the sun and culture of another country?
I’ve been dreaming of having a well deserved break and therefore whilst scrolling through the beautiful holidays on the net, three destinations really caught my eye.
The Costa del Sol
Just hearing the word ‘Spain’ instantly conjures up images of warmth and relaxation in your mind. It makes me want to make it a reality and book myself a villa in the gorgeous Costa del Sol, one with a swimming pool, of course!
The Costa del Sol is home to cheerful towns, such as Marbella, which has a really beautiful atmosphere. Then there are the beaches of Mijas, Fuengirola and Torremolinos, which will all set the scene for plenty of relaxation. If you feel like getting out and exploring, head to the city of Malaga. There you can visit ‘La Manquita’ (the One-Armed Lady), the nickname the locals gave to Malaga Cathedral, due to construction work on the south tower which has remained unfinished.
However it isn’t always about visiting somewhere warm and wonderful — it’s about relaxing somewhere serene and wonderful! A holiday in Iceland is a chance to travel to the country’s famous Golden Circle, where you’ll see the land geysers randomly exhale steam and waterfalls flow magically. Elsewhere, I’ve always wanted to take a trip to the Blue Lagoon and spend some time outdoors in the toasty warm waters of this geothermal spa. If you’re in the right place at the right time, there are the Northern Lights as well, something I’ve always dreamed of witnessing.
It would be great to some time to stroll around the capital, Reykjavik, too. This city, which has a mere 120,000 inhabitants, has an interesting National Museum that showcases the country’s history — the strongest section is the Settlement Era — and how Iceland gained its independence. Between attractions like this you can relax in some of the coolest bars, including Roasters hipster bar.
Perhaps your getaway is all about enjoying some ‘me’ time, relaxing without having to worry about getting up to answer emails, phone calls and have a constant mind buzz. Greek cities like Cyprus, where Paphos is located, are ideal for this, allowing you to take it easy, with elegant accommodation with dream-like scenery to enjoy while you dine and revitalizing spas to wind down in.
Paphos, Cyprus, is a fine destination for this. Check into an hotel tailored to adults only and then explore the city. As well as the sun, you can soak up a little history with visit to the Tombs of the Kings. The tombs themselves received their name due to their appearance, not to being used by royalty (they weren’t). These well-preserved tombs and chambers were actually used by residents from 3BC to 3AD during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
All of these destinations make for a truly relaxing holiday. There’s no fuss, just pure relaxation. It’s just what the doctor ordered!
